Education and Learning

At Sweet Pea all children are treated as individuals and cared for in small groups according to their age and stage of development. Our main focus is to provide children with a high level of stimulating activities that enhance learning through play whilst focusing on the key principles of the Foundation Phase.

The Foundation Phase encourages children to be creative, imaginative and makes learning more enjoyable and more effective.

Sweet Pea endeavour to offer opportunities for children to explore the world around them and understand how things work by taking part in practical activities relevant to their developmental stage. They will be challenged through practical activities and develop their thinking with open-ended questions. Children will be encouraged to explore concepts and share ideas for solving problems.

At each setting a key worker system is in place. The key worker has responsibility for a small group of children with whom they carry out individual observations and assess each child’s learning and development. Observations and findings are written and recorded in the children’s individual “Learning Journal”. Additional craft and photographic evidence is also included within. This makes a lovely keep sake for you and your child to take away and cherish the memories of their time throughout nursery.

Sweet Pea is committed to the inclusion of all children. All children have the right to be cared for and educated to develop to their full potential alongside each other through positive experiences, to enable them to share opportunities and experiences and develop and learn from each other

The nursery believes that all children have a right to experience and develop alongside their peers no matter what their individual needs. Sweet Pea aims to demonstrate through its work that it positively values and respects children of all ethnic origins/racial groups, religions, cultures, linguistic backgrounds and abilities. Children of both sexes are positively encouraged by staff to participate in all activities. The nursery will be responsible to promote good relations between children, staff, parents and the local community.

We are committed to the importance of daily outdoor play. Activities will be made accessible to all children so that they are able to freely and independently use the outdoor area. At Sweet Pea we thrive on the importance of children gaining regular access to outdoor play, fresh air and exercise.
