The baby unit at Sweet Pea is situated on the 1st floor. It is a cosy, welcoming room which is divided into two areas. We can accommodate 7 babies in the unit. Between these two areas we accommodate babies between the ages of 6 weeks – 1 year.

We have a large play room with an open plan milk preparation area and an independent sleep room, which consists of 3 cots and rest beds. A monitor and sleep chart system are in place.

The ratio of staff to babies is 1:3. The staff assigned to the baby unit are qualified and have extensive experience to encourage the babies through their early stages of development. Within the play room babies enjoy both free and structured play. The routine in the baby unit is adaptable to suit the individual needs of each child. The babies will have the opportunity to play outside each day (weather permitting). At meal times we provide the children with secure feeding chairs and encourage baby led feeding.

The Chick pea unit is also situated on the 1st floor adjacent to the baby unit. We cater for 7 toddlers between the two rooms. One room is designated for meal times and craft activities whilst the other is for free play and relaxation.

At meal times the children are encouraged to sit at child friendly tables and feed themselves with guidance if needed. During the nursery day the toddlers use these rooms to carry out a variety of activities including “Tap tap box” singing, story time, messy play, arts and crafts and much more. The nursery routine is followed but very flexible to fit in with your child’s individual needs. The ratio of staff to toddlers is 1:3. Staff plan and prepare stimulating activities for the age and stage of development for the children in this group.

The Sweet Pea unit is situated on the ground floor. It is an open plan space to accommodate 20 children in total. The area is sepearted in to two parts where children have access to a variety of stations offering construction, home corner, arts and crafts and reading.

A wide range of toys are available throughout the day and learning through play is paramount. Activities are free flowing and are based on a weekly theme taken from observations on the children during play. The aim is to develop the children’s knowledge by working on things which interest them. At meal times we have a designated area where children are seated around tables and encouraged to feed themselves. After lunch children are welcome to have an afternoon nap where a day bed is provided. The ratio of staff to Sweet peas is 1:4.

The spring pea unit is situated on the ground floor with free flow access to our enclosed garden area which is accessible and used continuously throughout the day. A lot of our pre-school activities involve being outdoors and our Spring Pea room has open access to our Nursery garden.

During dry weather the main door is open and the children can choose to play outside or inside. Children play a big part in the planning and implementation of their nursery day. We cater for 10 children with a staff ratio of 1:8

The starting point for our Nursery Curriculum is the Curriculum for Wales, but the depth and breadth of coverage goes far further. Our curriculum is carefully planned and co-ordinated to ensure the children at Sweet Pea receive a relevant, balanced, enjoyable and challenging learning experience. In this room the children have a designated area for eating meals and are encouraged to use knives and forks. There is also a toilet and hand basin which children can easily access.
